Grand Rapids, Michigan
Like many other U.S. cities, Grand Rapids was once inhabited by the Hopewell culture. In 1700, the Ottawa Indians moved into the Grand Rapids area and founded several villages there. Grand Rapids was then settled by European settlers in the 19th century. Louis Campau was the official founder of Grand Rapids and he built a trading post, cabin and blacksmith shop near the east bank of the Grand River. During the second half of the 19th century, Grand Rapids became known as the Furniture city because it was a major lumbering center and the premier manufacturing city in the states. Today, it is the leading manufacturer of office furniture.
